A criminal background check or also known as a police check is quite popular among gig economy workers. This is a checking process that must be passed by everyone who wants to become a gig driver at a rideshare and a food delivery companies such as Uber, DoorDash, Menulog and so on. When these companies looking to recruit new drivers, they should conduct these checks to help them verify individual criminal records.
The police check result will contain disclosable court outcomes and non-disclosable court outcomes of the applicant as issued by Australian Police Authorities. These results will be forwarded to the company that will employ you, the results will help the company determine whether to accept you as a partner or not.
Additional verification that is usually done along with criminal background checks is right to work check, this is done by running visa entitlement verification or commonly known as VEVO check. The check is typically required for temporary visa holders including overseas students who wish to work in the country. A visa entitlement check will count as a commencement document towards your identity verification.

An Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) accredited agency that has worked with big players such as Uber, DoorDash and Menulog.
This time we will try to talk more about the process of background check or criminal history check at the NCC agency because there are still many people out there who are still confused about the police check process when registering as a gig driver.

Australia Background Check Requirements
To be able to pass the Australian police check, a driver must be able to prove their identity. Then to successfully complete the proof of identity check, a driver must provide a total of 4 (four) different forms of identity.
Be sure that when providing the 4 types of ID, the agency is able to verify your full name, date of birth and a portrait photo on at least one of the ID.

Background Check Lodgement Process for Gig Drivers
Criminal background checks or national police checks for gig drivers such as Uber Eats DoorDash and Menulog are usually conducted at the same time as the signup process. To make it easier for them to complete this process, the company usually has a partnership with one of the police checking service agency.
In this article, we will provide an example of a police check process done with the NCC agency (nationalcrimecheck.com.au), the same agency used by Uber.
- Find the customized link
Look for and follow the link provided by the company where you registered as a driver. This link can be found during the registration process on the official website and sometimes included via email.Every company has its own customized links, for example for Uber, lodgement the process must be done via nationalcrimecheck.com.au/uber while for DoorDash should start out via doordashregional.nationalcrimecheck.com.au .
- Contact Verification
At this stage, you must enter initial data such as full legal name and contact details which include email and mobile number. In the check type section, you don’t need to select anything because it has been set by your organization.Also in this stage, you must also enter the same mobile number that you used to sign up with DoorDash or any other company. And also make sure the number is active and able to receive SMS verification sent by NCC.
- Personal Information
The next step is to enter your other personal data such as date of birth & gender, place of birth, contact details, residential address, how long you lived at this address, your previous address for the last 5 years, postal dispatch and other names. - Proof of ID Check
This last stage is where you have to enter all the four types of ID that we described earlier. In addition, you will also be asked to take a digital signature and a self-portrait photo for facial recognition and verification.Especially for temporary visa holders and overseas students, there are additional steps that must be taken to check their visa entitlement or right to work using the VEVO service provided by the Department of Home Affairs. This VEVO check will count as a commencement doc requirement towards your running check.

According to the guide provided by DoorDash, a VEVO result was used as (1x) commencement doc, foreign passport as (1x) primary doc, credit card and foreign licence as (2x) secondary docs.
Background Check Processing Time
You will receive a confirmation email and a copy of your check results as soon as your background check has been processed. Commonly, it can take up to 14 days for NCC to deliver the results. However, sometimes several mistakes can slow down the process, such as the email name and mobile number received by NCC is different from what was previously entered on the DoorDash/Uber sign-up page.
If you have not received your results within 14 days, please contact National Crime Check on 1800 080 095 or get in touch with their support team via email to support@nationalcrimecheck.com.au and ask them if there is a problem with the information provided thus preventing the issuance of background check results.
Can I use my recent background check result?
It’s common for a gig driver to work with multiple rideshare or delivery platforms at once, there’s no problem with that because it’s not a violation. If you are one of those who work on more than one platform, you might be wondering about reuse your existing or current background check results with other platforms.
Yes, you can use it, but the results must be issued by the same National Police Checking Service Agency. At least this is the policy that applies at DoorDash where they allow you to use the check results issued by the National Crime Check (NCC) and issued within 3 months.
So, for example in the last 3 months, you have done a background check to become an Uber Eats driver, you can use the results again to register as a DoorDash driver. You simply share your check results to support@nationalcrimecheck.com.au with the Subject “Share My Certificates With Doordash“. Processing time will likely also be faster than you conduct the check from the beginning.
